Urbandale is small city that is part of Des Moines and West Des Moines Metropolitan area. As of 2014 the city population was at 43,150, which has increased exponentially since 2000, a 48.4% increase to be exact.

Urbandale used to be a streetcar suburb of Des Moines and had four coal mines that were eventually closed in the 1940s. When the town was founded there was a total population of 298 people, but over the years it has expanded westward and has become the city that it is today.

Living in Urbandale

Urbandale is a mostly residential area, but recent development of industrial parks has expanded the town, as well as many mortgage and banking facilities that are also located here.

In 2007, Money Magazine listed Urbandale as the 39th best place to live on their “100 Best Places to Live” in the United States. This city has a wide range of residents that call the area home, with 28.9% of the population being between the ages of 25 to 44, making the median age of residents 37.8 years old.


As of 2015, the median household income was $78,208, with median home prices just above $200,000. This includes a great mix of real estate ranging from single-family homes to townhomes and condos.  The area also offers some multi-family housing properties which have shown to be a great investment. 

Shopping and Dining Options in Urbandale

Urbandale offers a variety of different shops ranging from small boutiques to larger chain stores. The area also has their own mall, called the Cedar Ridge Shopping Center containing shops appealing to all prospective shoppers.  Shoppers of Urbandale also frequent nearby Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines, which is the largest shopping center in the state with over 1,340,000 square feet of shopping bliss.

Dining options in Urbandale are plentiful. Whether you're in the mood for American, Italian, Japanese, or farm to table food, Urbandale has you covered. Local favorites include; Urban Grill, Baru 66 and Trostel Greenbriar.

Urbandale Parks and Recreation

Urbandale has plenty to offer when it comes to parks and recreation. The Parks and Recreation department host many different recreational classes that range from fitness based exercises, like tennis or cardio and strength training, to music and dance classes. They also offer them for all different age groups, so if you are looking for something to do on the weekends, or something to keep your children busy and having fun, then these programs are right for you. Urbandale also has an indoor swimming facility that is open to the public, which is the only indoor center in the metropolitan area. They have lap swimming as well as recreational swimming, and offer swimming lessons.


While Urbandale is a smaller area compared to the Des Moines metropolitan area, their parks and outdoor recreational opportunities are not. They have 48 different parks with over 993 acres, as well as 41 miles of trails that residents can walk or bike. Urbandale also offers numerous sports fields, with a softball league during the summer, indoor and outdoor facilities that are available to rent, and a Senior Center. This area is sure to fit all your needs when it comes to recreation.

Schools, Health, and Transportation

The Urbandale Community School district contains six elementary school, one middle school, and one high school. But, depending on where you are located in Urbandale, some portions belong in different school districts in the area, like the Dalles Center-Grimes and West Des Moines school districts. The Urbandale Community School District takes pride in their educational system and adheres to the rigorous standards set forth by the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program. If you are looking for more hands-on learning, then there is the Metro West Learning Academy that is shared by 6 school districts in the surrounding areas. This school is a student-centered environment that is committed to creating positive change for students.


Urbandale is part of the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) that makes getting around Des Moines easier and more convenient. The Urbandale area is part of Dart’s flex routes, which takes them around Urbandale, but also allows people to travel outside the area if they are looking for different shopping, commuting to work, or just want to go into the city for the day.

The Urbandale area has a few health care facilities, one being The Iowa Clinic. This clinic specializes in family medicine, internal medicine and primary care. Urbandale also has a family medicine and urgent care clinic. However, if you are looking for more specialized care, you might need to travel into the city of Des Moines, which is only a short drive away.
