Johnston Iowa started out as a railway between Des Moines and Perry and was known as the Johnston Station, but in 1970 Johnston was annexed and became its own city that is now a part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan area.

Johnston is located just north of Des Moines and it has been voted twice on MONEY’s Best Places list because of its award-winning schools and excellent quality of life. As of 2014 the population was 20,359, which has exponentially grown over the last few years. The median household income is higher than the state average at $97,644 with the median value of a house being $241,225.

Living in Johnston

Johnston has been named the 16th “Best Place to Live” in America by the Money Magazine and is also known for its excellent schools and teachers. This is not all this city has to offer though, they have a low cost of living, coupled with higher than average income, making the quality of life for their residents extraordinary. They also have strong home values and safe neighborhoods. One of the safest neighborhoods in Johnston is City Center.

Within the abundant neighborhoods in Johnston, you are sure to find the style of home you are looking for. Single family homes are more popular in this city, but it does offer all other types of homes as well, such as townhomes or condos.

Shopping and Dining Options in Johnston

Downtown Johnston offers many shopping and dining options that are sure to satisfy your every need. They have craft shops, photo galleries, jewelry merchants, and many other types of shops. Johnston also has a Crown Center Strip Mall as well as Merle Hay Mall. If you don’t find what you are looking for in town, then you are only a short drive away from Des Moines, which has an abundance of shopping centers and stores.

Johnston also has a wide variety of dining options. So, if you feel like having American food, French food, seafood, or Mexican, this city has it all. Be sure to check out some local favorites, such as Doc's Loung, Trostel’s Greenbriar, Baru 66, El Mariachi and more. Johnston also has a Farmers’ Market if you are looking for more fresh and local food options in the area.

Johnston Parks and Recreation

Johnston has multiple parks available to their residents with over 35 miles of trails. The town also has plans for a groundbreaking improvement to Terra Park. The project is $5.4 million and will include creating an eight-acre fishing lake, a great lawn for concerts and games, an amphitheater, pier, playgrounds, and much more! Be sure to check out the other local parks in the area, such as Morningside Park, Crosshaven Park, Johnston Commons, and many more.

Johnston also has a Soccer Club facility as well as a Senior Citizen Center and a Walnut Ridge Recreation Area. The Walnut Ridge Recreation Area sits on 26,000 acres on Saylorville Lake and offers boating, swimming, fishing, hiking and hunting. The area also has an 18-hole disc golf course and provides playgrounds and picnic tables for day-use. Johnston has a lot to offer when it comes to the outdoors, but also offers education opportunities. Residents and visitors can visit the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum as well as the Johnston Historical Museum.

Schools, Health, and Transportation

Johnston Community School District (JCSD) is one of the largest school districts in the state of Iowa and is a large employer for Johnston. The school district is comprised of five elementary schools, two middle schools, and a high school, with plans to build a second high school in a few years. Johnston Community is proud of its education system and goes above and beyond by providing before and after school childcare, preschool, and recreational and educational programs.

Johnston provides their residents with a few different options for their healthcare. The Iowa Clinic – Johnston is one of several locations and provides residents with family medicine services. The Mercy Clinics Family Medical also provides family medical care. The university of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics provides residents with more specialized care, such as pediatrics, neurology, internal medicine and orthopedics. If the town doesn’t have a specific service that you are looking for, the big medical facilities located in Des Moines are only a short drive away.

Johnston is part of the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) that makes getting around Des Moines and surrounding areas easier and more convenient. Residents of Johnston are also only a short drive away from the Des Moines International Airport.
