Grimes Iowa is known for its community of young professionals, excellent school districts and its proximity to Des Moines. The town has slowly begun to make a name for itself, and is becoming one of the premier residential areas of Iowa. They have diversified residential living and recreational opportunities, making it one of Iowa’s best places to live and work. 

As of 2015 the population was 11,423, which was a 38 percent increase over 5 years. The median family income was $72,308, which is higher than the state average, and the median home value of $160,700 is more affordable than other areas in the metropolitan area. According to a survey in 2010, 38.1 percent of Grimes residents had a higher education of some kind (Bachelor’s, graduate or professional degree).  


Living in Grimes 

Because of the exponential population growth of Grimes, approximately 150 new homes have been built each year, and more infrastructures and development are underway to accommodate over 500 more. Because of this recent growth, many people living in Grimes are new to the area and have growing families. This creates a community where kids can play together and families can get to know one another, making the community very close-knit.  


Shopping and Dining Options in Grimes 

Downtown Grimes offers many shopping and dining options for residents and visitors that are locally owned. These shops will accommodate the everyday needs or residents. However, if you are looking for bigger malls with name brand stores, then you will need to travel into the metropolitan area of Des Moines. They have numerous shopping centers with all the stores you could think of that will fulfill every need and want.  

Downtown Grimes has many micro brews that have been built in the last few years, and will give you a one of a kind experience. The town also has numerous dining options to satisfy any craving. Some must try restaurants in the area are the Radish Dining and Catering, Breadeaux Pizza, Fortune Garden, and much more! 


Grimes Parks and Recreation  

Grimes is very proud of their parks system and community and just implemented that all of their parks, trails and Green Spaces to be Tobacco-Free in 2015. Grimes has many options for parks, and a few are: Autumn Park, Beaverbrooke Park, and Glenstone Park. The Grimes Community Complex/Park includes a gym spot for sports teams to practice, as well as basketball hoops, a volleyball court, a green space, soccer goals and picnic areas. The South Sports Complex was just built in Grimes and encompasses two tennis courts, 9 acres of soccer fields, three sand volleyball courts, three softball fields, four baseball fields, basketball hoops, a skate park, trails, and much more! 

The City of Grimes also offers youth programs, that are either seasonal or year-round. Some of these programs include Fitness training, hunter’s education class, Chess tournaments, music classes and many more. So, whatever you and your family are interested in, Grimes has many programs and activities that will entertain everyone.  


Schools, Health, and Transportation 

Because Grimes is located between Dallas and Polk counties the school district is shared with Dallas and is called the Dallas Center – Grimes Community School District. The South Prairie Elementary houses Grimes student’s kindergarten through second grade. They currently have 570 students and provide additional assistance to students through reading recovery, Special Education and TAG programs. The Dallas Center Elementary is for grades K-5, while the North Ridge Elementary is for grades 3-4. The Dallas Center Grimes Middle School is for grades 6-7, while Meadows is for grades 8-9. This school offers hands-on learning opportunities and help students refine their leadership skills and develop goals for their future. Lastly, the Dallas Center Grimes High School is for grades 10-12.  

By being so close to Des Moines, there is easy access to the International Airport, which makes it easy to fly to any destination. Multiple interstates also allow for easy commutes. Grimes is also a part of the DART system, which is the local public transit system that services all the Des Moines metropolitan area.  

Grimes is serviced by the UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine, where doctors are dedicated to the health and well-being of the residents. For more specialized needs, Des Moines is only a short drive away, and has all the specialized treatment and care one could need.
